What is Large Volume Liposuction?

Large Volume Liposuction is the removal of more than 5 liters of lipoaspirate (fat) during a procedure. Fat cells are produced in infancy and childhood. After that point, the cells get larger and smaller, but don’t go away with weight loss. The only way to permanently remove fat is to remove the cells.

What are the benefits?

1. Single procedure – performing the surgery in 1 stage can avoid the need for multiple trips to the operating room. In addition, the ideal way to remove fat is in 1 sitting, since liposuction does create some scarring under the skin which increases the risk of fat “stuck in the scar tissue” and increased risks of contour issues if done in multiple stages. Liposuction should only need to be done 1 time per area.

2. More dramatic results – since more fat is removed, more sculpting can be performed and there can be 10+ pounds of weight loss. Small volume liposuction doesn’t produce the same results

Is it Risky?

Large volume liposuction can be done safely, but has to be performed by a surgeon with experience in management of the post operative physiological changes. The procedure needs to be done at a facility that has trained personnel, the ability to admit you overnight if needed, and the ability to give you adequate fluids after surgery. A board certified Anesthesiologist and team can help minimize the risk of complications. We perform these surgeries at GW Hospital which is a level 1 trauma center with all the resources needed (unlike a private physicians office/outpatient surgery center).
