What are body implants?
Body implants are solid silicone devices that can be used to increase the size of different muscular regions of the body.
What are the most common areas?
Pectoralis implants, buttock implants and hip implants are the most common, but implants can also be placed in other areas such as the calves. Unlike breast implants, body implants can be cut, contoured and shaped since they are completely solid so there is no possibility of leaking.
What is involved in the procedure?
The implants are placed below the muscle or the layer covering the muscle (fascia). Sometimes a drain is placed and compression garments are worn post operatively. Incisions are usually in the armpit for pectoralis implants, between the buttocks for buttock implants and in the underwear line at the hip for hip implants.
Who is a good candidate?
A good candidate is someone who is healthy and has specific areas where they desire increased volume.
Risks – specific risks to implants
- Infection – Any prosthetic device increase the risk of an immediate post operative infection, although this happens in the minority of cases, it may require removal of the implant
- Movement/flipping – there is a possibility that the implant can shift, flip or move in time
- Need for revision – if there is an issue or asymmetry, a revision may be needed
- Pain – there is a chance of pain after the procedure
- Under/overcorrection – the implants come in various sizes and there may be more or less correction that you want even with preoperative sizing.
