What is a nipple reduction?
Nipple reduction is a technique to shorten the nipple and make it more aesthetically pleasing.
Who would benefit from this surgery?
After breastfeeding, some patients have very long nipples that may hang or rub on clothing.
How is a nipple reduction performed?
The surgery is performed under local anesthesia in the office. The excess nipple tissue is marked off at the base of the nipple. Local anesthetic is injected and a circular strip of skin and tissue is removed at the base, leaving the tip intact and still attached to the nerve supply and breast ducts. The incision is closed which pushes the extra nipple back into the breast mound shortening it. This procedure can also be modified to decrease wide nipples.
Nipple Reduction Recovery
Dressings are placed and scars tend to be barely visible once healed. You can go back to work the next day and start exercising within a few days.
Nipple Reduction Risks
Risks are minor and would include visible scars, interruption to nerve supply or interruption of breast ducts causing issues with breast feeding.
