What is a back lift?
A back lift is a procedure to remove extra skin of the upper back or lower back. This is most frequently done after major weight loss or due to aging. An upper back lift addresses unsightly back rolls. A lower back lift focuses on the loose skin around the lower back, buttocks, and outer thighs.
Who is a good candidate for a back lift?
Patients who have hanging/loose skin or buttock deflation can be good candidates. Many patients choose to get a back lift following major weight loss. Some women may be in need of a back lift following pregnancy. A back lift is a body contouring procedure not a weight loss procedure. Weight should be stable for at least 6-12 months prior to the procedure. You should be healthy, and nutrition should be optimized.
How is the procedure performed?
- Upper back lift – a bra line incision is made across the entire back. This is used to remove loose skin and back rolls. Drains are placed prior to closure.
- Lower back lift – An incision is made from hip to hip and the extra skin is removed or buried to utilize to augment the buttocks. Fat graft may also be used for more volume. Drains are placed prior to closure.
Back Lift Recovery
Some swelling and discomfort is to be expected following your back lift in Washington DC. Most patients return to work in 1-2 weeks. Stress should be avoided on the incisions for 3-4 weeks. Drains are usually removed in 10-14 days. Compression garments may be worn if liposuction is needed.
