What is an inverted nipple repair?
Some patients have a nipple which is completely flat or tethered within the breast by connective tissue bands causing it to become inverted. This can cause problems with both aesthetics and function.
Can this be corrected?
Yes! This is a fairly straightforward procedure performed under local anesthesia in the office.
How is this procedure performed?
We make a very tiny incision at the base of the nipple after injecting local anesthetic. We then use a suture to provide traction on the nipple and release the connective tissue bands at the base. This creates projection of the nipple. We then use sutures to hold the nipple in its new position.
Inverted Nipple Repair Recovery
Recovery is easy and you can go back to normal activities by the next day. Generally ibuprofen is all that is needed for the discomfort.
Inverted Nipple Repair Risks
Risks are low and include recurrence of the inversion (uncommon), changes to nipple sensation or changes in ability to breastfeed (due to the ducts/nerves right below the nipple being interrupted.
Your Inverted Nipple Repair will be performed in Dr. Praful Ramineni‘s surgery center located in Washington, DC.
