What Is a Mommy Makeover?
A mommy makeover is a general term that is used for a surgery to address both breast and body aesthetic surgery after pregnancy. Post-pregnancy bodies can have breast deflation with drooping (ptosis) or increased volume, abdominal muscle weakness, extra skin and stretch marks. Most commonly this surgery includes a tummy tuck +/- liposuction with muscle repair and breast surgery (lift, augmentation or both). Some patients add on procedures such as buttock augmentation. This procedure is customized to each patient.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Ideally, you should be done having children. Pregnancy after a mommy makeover will undo some of the results by re-stretching the skin. You should be healthy without any major uncontrolled medical issues and should be relatively close to your ideal body weight. If you are a smoker, you should be off all nicotine products for at least 4 weeks prior to surgery.
Your Mommy Makeover Consultation
A mommy makeover consultation will involve an in-depth conversation regarding your appearance goals and eligibility for surgery.
During the consultation, you and your surgeon will discuss which combination of procedures will be included in your mommy makeover. Choices include abdominoplasty, a breast lift, a breast reduction, a breast augmentation, an augmentation mastopexy, liposuction, and a buttocks lift.
You must also provide your complete medical history to help your surgeon determine whether the surgeries are safe for your overall health. Tell your surgeon about all previous and current medications, along with all allergies.
How to Prepare for a Mommy Makeover
Emotional and physical preparation is very important in your mommy makeover journey. Surround yourself with a healthy support system before, during, and after the procedure.
Arranging for time off work, accomplishing household chores in advance, and setting up help with meal preparation will also aid in your recovery post-surgery. Refrain from strenuous activities for several weeks, and arrange for help at home.
Prepare your bedroom with enough pillows, and keep your necessities nearby, since the recovery period will restrict your movement. Get compression garments to wear for at least two weeks, which will help to control post-surgical swelling.
On the day of surgery, bathe with basic soap to avoid complications during surgery. Avoid using lotion, deodorant, moisturizer, and other skin products.
Refrain from eating food eight hours before the surgery. Eating may risk vomiting and aspiration during the procedure.
How Is the Procedure Performed?
A mommy makeover can be performed as an outpatient surgery in most cases. The exact technique varies by what components are performed – see Abdominoplasty, Breast lift, Breast Reduction, Breast Augmentation.
